Did you know – property tax relief for the disabled?
The Home Owner Grant Act of B.C. allows a disabled person who owns their residence some property tax relief in the appropriate circumstances.
Where the homeowner is a “person with disabilities,” one of the categories of eligibility is when the owner spends funds to make an upgrade to the residence that helps the owner with, or otherwise alleviates, his or her disability.
There is a form (Form B, Certificate of Physician and Property Owner – PDF here) which a physician must complete, and sign. The particular upgrade must be described on the form. If the Grant Administration department approves it, the homeowner’s property taxes will be reduced.
If you think you may be eligible, I suggest contacting your city tax department for more information.
